Why Yugoslavia – a country which doesn’t exist anymore for 30 years? That’s right, but the Yugoslavian history is closely linked to the history of Germany and Austria. Yugoslavian history is German and Austrian history. The Germans and the Austrians invaded Yugoslavia in the First and the Second World War, both times with terrible consequences. When Yugoslavia crashed in 1991, Germany again had a disastrous role.
What is also making the region so exciting: it is marked not only by Austria-Hungary, but especially two cultures which have been ignored in the European history – the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empires which both had their centres in Constantinople or Istanbul.
Finally, the region is presenting itself today like it was described by the filmmaker Emir Kusturica: often chaotic, always surprising, in any case absolutely lovable.
